Under direct supervision and following established departmental policies, goals, and procedures will obtain biological specimens to ai! d in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. This includes (but not limited to) venous, arterial and capillary specimens. Performs repetitive and mechanical routine tests and duties that do not require independent judgment. Provides supervision and training to new phlebotomists.
Will encounter neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric aged patients and their families in performance of duties. Will follow established procedures for specimen collection in each of these age-related groups. Ensures work area is neat, organized, and well stocked with in-dated materials.
Essential Duties:
Transports, collects, receives, and prepares biological specimens for analysis using procedures consistent with safe work practices and proper laboratory techniques, while maintaining integrity of specimens.
Organizes workload for the most efficient and timely collection and processing of specimens for the performance of testing.
Performs! maintenance, daily quality control, and testing of unknown sa! mples from the College of American Pathologists to ensure proper functioning of the bedside testing monitors and to identify and correct technical problems. Performs patient bedside testing and records the results in the Laboratory Information System.
Maintains a well-stocked phlebotomy area, which includes restocking, unpacking, inventory, and stock rotation of phlebotomy supplies. May include unpacking and distribution of other laboratory supplies.
Disinfects work areas and equipment to prevent spread of disease.
May be cross trained in Reference, Front office, and Oncology to assist as needed during staff shortages. May assist physicians with Bone Marrow Collections after proper training.
Participates in proficiency testing to monitor and evaluate quality of laboratory testing, to introduce new policies and procedures, and review existing procedures. Responsible for timely completion of proficiency testing.
Qualifications

Education:
High school or GED required.
Experience:
Must understand basic Medical Terminology.
One year customer services expereince.
Licensure:
Must have and maintain at all times, a valid Nebraska driver's license and a good driving record.
