SUMMARY
Working under the supervision of the Rehabilitation Leadership Team and the Speech Patho! logy Manager, the Speech Language Pathologist acts as a health professional who provides service to persons who have disruptions in the area of speech, language, hearing and/or swallowing Performs other duties as assigned
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
PEOPLE
- Evaluates the patientâs rehabilitation needs, establishes treatment plans and goals, and periodically reassesses the patientâs response to the treatment plan
- Communicates and interacts positively with other team members, including but not limited to Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech Pathologists, nurses and physicians.
- Supervises speech/language assistants and students according to ASHA and Nebraska State Health Department guidelines, and in accordance with Rehab Center and RWMC policies
- Assess and treat a patient population, through physician referral, that includes pediatrics through geriatrics
- Work with patients throughout all of the Rehab! ilitation Departmentâs settings, which may include: Hospital! in-patients, out-patients, Home Health agencies: nursing facilities, hospitals, school systems, and child development centers
- Explains interventions in language that is appropriate to patientâs ethnic, sociological, and cultural background, and to patientâs age
- Works with members of the health team, which may include physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, vocation counselors, nurses, social workers, insurance liaisons, teachers or other specialists
- Communicates and interacts positively with other team members to optimize patient care. Team members may include licensed medical care providers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, vocation counselors, nurses, social workers, insurance liaisons, teachers or other specialists.
- Utilizes non-direct patient treatment time productively and professionally
- Completes appropriate documentation required by the ho! spital, third-party payers, and regulatory agencies in a timely and accurate manner
- Maintains an awareness of departmental budgetary guidelines and cost-containment efforts
- Identifies and pursues own professional growth and development for the enhancement and growth of the Speech Therapy Department
- Participates in professional continuing education at local, regional, and national levels.
- Develops clinical expertise in at least one area
- Provides a continuum of services including prevention, identification, consultation and treatment
- Schedules and prioritizes own workload
- Evaluates and assesses the patientâs rehabilitative condition and potential both initially and at timely intervals to include the following:
o Selects or devises appropriate treatment methods for patient. A! dministers modalities and treatment techniques accurately, effectively ! and safely.
o Establishes attainable, functional goals, specific to each patient from assessment results and in conjunction and coordination with the patientâs personal goals, as well as the plan of the referring physician.
o Assesses patientâs response to treatment routinely and adjusts treatment plan appropriately.
o Instructs patient and/or family in home program techniques and equipment when appropriate.
o Terminates services when maximum benefit is received and formulates appropriate discharge plan.
o Makes appropriate referrals to other health services or therapies.
- Attends all departmental and hospital meetings or in-services as outlined in department policies and procedures.
- Participates in and coordinates care conferences with family members and patients regarding treatment plans, functional deficits, and social ramifications.
- Maintains awareness of Service Excellence Standards and utilizes them in daily intera! ctions.
- Recognizes own strengths and weaknesses.
- Monitors own performance and identifies supervisory needs
- Demonstrates self-initiative in identifying methods for improving delivery of patient care and departmental functioning.
- Implements improvements independently as appropriate. When necessary, advises ST Manager or Rehabilitation Leadership Team of recommendations.
- Demonstrates the ability to respond positively to changing circumstances to maximize the opportunity, or to minimize the problem. Always acts decisively and takes effective action.
- Follows policies and procedures set forth by the Rehabilitation Department and by Regional West Medical Center.
- Functions according to ASHA Code of Ethics and the Nebraska State Practice Act.
- Represents the Rehabilitation Department as requested in conjunction with Regional West Medical Center activities or communi! ty functions. Upholds and promotes the philosophies of the Rehabilitati! on Department and Regional West Medical Center.

- Ability to interact well with patients, family, public, physician, and other staff regardless of age, color, creed, race, or diagnosis
- Progressive levels of expertise will require one or more of the following: work experience, self-study, special certification or post-professional education.
- Hand/eye coordination and precise movement to perform diagnostic tests, and to perform specific exercises and treatment motions.
- Ability to communicate effectively and positively with patients, families, and other health personnel
- Must understand patient and family dynamics on a motivational and analytical level. Demonstrates the willingness to work with a variety of patients Ability to interact effectively with patients from a variety of ethnic, sociological, and cultural backgrounds, and from different age groups
- Ability to move be! tween patients and patient care areas and other departments, and to contracted facilities to complete treatments
- Must be able to perform and assist with patient transfers, and to move and use equipment as needed to provide treatment to patients.
- Ability to concentrate on and process complex tasks and information, and formulate appropriate plan of action. Ability to assess and comprehend a variety of patient disabilities through auditory, visual, tactile and verbal modes, and to be able to select appropriate tests, treatments and teaching strategies. Must assimilate information from various sources, analyze the information and form the patient treatment plan.
- Visual acuity required to assess patient and perform treatments. Tactile acuity needed to complete treatments and assessments.
- Blood and blood by-products, body fluids, radiation and potentially infectious individuals. Occasional chemotherapy agents.
