Under minimal supervision, functions as a licensed pra! ctical nurse in accordance with established standards, policies, procedures, and physician orders for patients presenting at the Neurology Clinic.
Care is given for patients aged neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric, at various developmental levels. Patients can be from both traditional and non-traditional family structure with a variety of sociocultural and educational backgrounds.
Uses and discloses patient protected health information: 1) Only as it applies to job functions, 2) in amounts minimally necessary for intended purpose, and 3) in a confidential manner.
Essential Functions:
1. Takes patients vital signs (i.e., weight, blood pressure, temperature) and records data on patients' charts. Assists in completion of patient-provided and clinic forms for provider signature.
2. Interviews patients and/or family members to gather patient information needed for EMG, including reason for test, current medi! cations, history, age and symptoms. Incorporates patient infor! mation with test results for physician review.
3. Explains test procedures to patient and/or family member to allay fears, apprehensions and elicit cooperation.
4. Perform nerve conduction and nerve sensory testing on patients.
5. Prepares and operates equipment necessary for Nerve Conduction and EEGs.
6. Combines all information needed by physician for interpretation of tests including, patient information, wave form identification, and notes of unusual occurrences; eliminates from consideration all artifact caused by patient movement.
7. Assembles, calibrates and tests all equipment used to insure proper working condition. Adheres to infection control policies when handling equipment. Performs preventative maintenance according to established guidelines and performs minor repairs. Notifies Director of Business Development of major repair problems.
8. Gives injections and/or oral medications to patients as needed and co! llects specimens for laboratory testing.
9. Schedules appointments and procedures for patients, takes messages, and calls in prescriptions into pharmacies.
10. Performs related general office duties such as filing, faxing records, retrieving and/or copying of charts, prepares and distributes memos, updates office manuals, and order office/housekeeping supplies.
11. Files all lab and other forms in patients medical record following review by Doctor:
12. Assists Doctor with various procedures upon request, EMG's, Lumbar Punctures, and Botox injections.
13. Assists with patient discharge instructions and in establishing referral appointments and completing referral forms when necessary.
14. Orders and stocks all Central Supply items and medications.
15. Maintains a clean and orderly patient care environment, cleaning room after each patient.
16. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the! field by reading appropriate books, journals, and other literature and! attending related seminars and conferences.
Qualifications
Education:
High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
Completion of LPN training.
Experience:
Approximately 6 to 9 months on-the-job experience in order to acquire and be able to perform nerve conduction and nerve sensory testing on patients, knowledge of procedures and policies pertinent to the Neurology Clinic.
Licensure/Certification:
Licensed as an LPN in Nebraska.
Current certification in Basic Life Support
