Essential Functions/Competencies

Provides safe driving of the ambulance according to the Standards of the US Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and EMS National Standards.

Utilizes lights and sirens only under the direction of the Medical Control Physician (MCP)

Drive the ambulance or provide map reading support to minimize call response time

2. Assists Transport Team in the care of the patient as appropriate which may include:

Moving and securing patient in transport cot/incubator

Placing patient on transport monitors assisting in the assessment of the patient and maintaining airways.

Obtaining vital signs and repeat assessments as necessary

Placement of NG or OG tube

Assis! t in establishing and maintaining IV access and administering ! medicated intravenous fluid therapy

Assist and administer Enteral and parenteral approved prescription medications

Access indwelling catheters and implanted central IV ports for fluid and medication administration

Assist in Intraosseous needle placement

Administration of supplemental oxygen by appropriate oxygen therapy dose and method.

Assist with bag/mask ventilation during emergency procedures

Assist with emergency medication administration according to scope of practice and the obtained designated certifications.

3. Monitor and maintain the general condition of the ambulance and transport equipment including ensuring the responsiveness to the organizational functions of the transport process:

Ensure response times are within 10 minutes of a ground call to the time the ambulances departs

Maintains all transport equipment in a state of constant readiness by checking all equipment! at the beginning of each shift, noting any discrepancy and make or arrange for repair

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of transport equipment location, function and restocking procedures.

Wiping down with approved disinfectant inside of ambulance after each run

Emptying wastebaskets after each run

Changing sharps containers when 2/3 full

Washing ambulance as it becomes dirty

Monitor fuel level to keep fuel level at ¾ to full level

Assures that ambulance is taken to appropriate location for all maintenance procedures

Change oxygen and air tanks when they fall below 1200 psi or as needed for an extended drive time (greater than 3 hours one way)

Checks, cleans and stocks transport packets, transport equipment, and ambulance supplies ensuring equipment is functioning after each ground transport

Completes daily weekly and ongoing ambulance and equipment checklists

Troubleshoot all e! quipment and ensures that all malfunctions are promptly reported

4. Assists in the Emergency Department as needed which may include

Obtain and document vital signs

Perform IV starts upon direction of the RN

Perform venipuncture and capillary blood sampling

Start IV maintenance fluids

Administer nebulizer treatments and MDI treatments

Transport Emergency Department patients to x-ray, CT, MRI, and inpatient units as needed

5. Staff the Children's Hospital & Medical Center Communication Center as the Communication Specialist

Handles incoming patient transfer calls from outside hospitals following approved protocols, establishing medical control, accessing detailed critical patient information, and coordinates and dispatches all Children's Hospital Critical Care transport teams

Documents all communication of call’s received, dispatch times, turn-downs in accordance with established guidelines including key components of each call i! ncluding demographic information, appropriate vital signs, and referring physician notes.

Coordinates calls with transport team, rotor-wing transports with rotor wing communication center, and fixed wing with transports with fixed wing communication center, as needed

Coordinates trip tracking for the Children’s Transport Team.

Maintains team status and availability, notifies team and dispatches them appropriately. Informs team of all key patient and trip information in a timely manner.

Serves as point of contact while team is out.

Utilizes outstanding communication skills. Uses a tone and communication style that is welcoming, respectful, empathetic, and professional. Communicates effectively with physicians, nurses, and other clinicians and support staff.

Demonstrates excellent written communication skills and computer/technology aptitude. Documents completely and succinctly, using proper grammar and approved abbrevia! tions. Able to grasp new software programs and is comfortable with tech! nology such as paging and text messaging.

Takes initiative to problem solve; takes responsibility for following through on every call.

Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or G.E.D. required.

Completion of an Paramedic program required.

Minimum 1 year of experience as a Paramedic required.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
Current and Valid Nebraska and National Registry Paramedic license required.

Current and Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) required.

Current and valid Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required, within 6 months of hire.

Must have valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle d! riving record required.

Completed and passed the Emergency Veh! icle Operators Course required, within one year of hire and renewed every 2 years.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
FIT FOR TRANSPORT DUTY:
Multiple physical activities performed at the same time (carrying multiple equipment while pushing the cot or incubator)

Medical Conditions:
Transport team members may not donate blood within 24 hours of a work shift

Any medical condition that may interfere with transport assignment must be reported to the Transport Patient Care manager

A signed statement from a personal physician must be submitted to the Transport PCM and Employee Health is a health condition develops that prevents the transport personnel from participating in the program

The pregnant transport person is not required to remain on active transport status any longer than she or her private physician feels she may safely do so. At 35 weeks gestation, the transport team member will not participate in transp! ort
