Cares for patients aged neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric at various development levels. Pat! ients are from both traditional and non-traditional family structures with a variety of sociocultural and educational backgrounds.
The Registered Nurse is responsible to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for assigned patients. The Registered Nurse demonstrates competency in nursing practice as outlined in the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act. The Registered Nurse must be trained to provide care for patients in their primary department.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
Provider
1. Utilizes the nursing process to assess and prioritize patient needs.
2. Formulates, implements and evaluates the patientâs plan of care. Adjusts plan of care in consultation with the Charge nurse as appropriate and implements plan.
3. Uses basic communication skills to provide care to assigned patients/ families. Relays pertinent information through appropriate documentation and referral to o! ther health care team members such as medicine, dietary and su! pport staff. Initiates discharge planning working in collaboration with the appropriate staff.
4. Initiates appropriate nursing action in crisis or emergency situations.
5. Carries out physician orders.
6. Provides continuity of care to meet the patientâs changing needs.
7. Records information on the patient record in accordance with charting guidelines.
8. Utilizes time management principles and techniques.
9. Recognizes changes in patient status based on interpretation of assessments.
10. Recognizes examples of use of evidence/research based practice- at performance appraisal presents journal article supporting specific approach to a nursing care problem.
Teacher
1. Uses available teaching aids to implement teaching plans of assigned patients and revises the plan based on evaluation of effectiveness.
Advocate
1. Maintains patient confidentiality.
2. Maintains a sa! fe and therapeutic patient environment.
3. Respects the rights of patients and significant others.
4. Responsible for reporting and/or correcting potential patient safety conditions or practices.
Professional/Leader
1. Demonstrates knowledge about the ethical, legal, professional values of nursing, guided by the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics.
2. Demonstrates positive communication, problem solving skills.
3. Assists the charge nurse with coordination of patient care and appropriate utilization services through use of clinical pathways.
4. Utilizes time management principles and techniques.
5. Effectively delegates to all levels of staff in collaboration with the charge nurse based on their scope of practice, job descriptions, abilities and patient/unit needs.
6. Works to maintain positive team relationships with co-workers, physicians, and other members of the health care team.
7. Supports Performance Improvement and Patient Safety at the uni! t/organizational level.
Customer Service
1. Receives, greets and directs patients, family members, clients, visitors and physicians in a positive and conscientious manner adhering to customer excellence standards
2. Acknowledges internal and external customers with eye contact and a smile.
3. Phones are answered promptly with a friendly voice using a proper greeting.
4. Ability to prioritize, organize and effectively handle multiple tasks and interruptions in a positive manner.

- Essential functions
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
Experience in Labor & Delivery or 2 year Med-surg pref! erred.
1. Knowledge of nursing theory and practice acquired through completion of an accredited school of nursing to be eligible for licensure as a registered nurse.
2. Current
Nebraska
license as a registered nurse. Neonatal Resuscitation Program Certification; BLS Certification.
After 2 years of employment, strongly encouraged to pursue certification in specialty area.
After 2 years of employment, encouraged to pursue BSN degree (if an ADN or Diploma RN)
3. Approximately six months on-the-job experience to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of hospital, unit, departmental procedures and policies to meet quality and quantity standards for the job.
4. Interpersonal skills necessary in order to gather and exchange information with physicians, patients, families, visitors and other units and departments.
5. Analytical skills necessary to provide care, to prepare care plan, to interpret ava! ilable data to develop and implement effective nursing care and problem! solving measures for patients' physical, mental, and spiritual well being and to assist and care for intrapartum, post-partum and medical surgical patients.
6. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail at least 80% of work time when planning and implementing professional nursing care, resolving patient care problems and dealing with patients and their families during stressful situations.
7. Ability to be on feet and walk up to 80% of work time; ability to push, and/or pull up to 200 pounds, lift up to 50 pounds for up to 20% of work time when positioning patient, moving equipment and so forth.
Working Conditions
1. Normal patient care environment.
2. Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic chemicals, distasteful patient care activity approximately 50% of work time. Minimal exposure to combative patients.
3. Adherence to safety standards minimizes exposure to hazards.
