To act as a clinical role model and mentor in pediatric speech therapy through competency and experience in the evaluation and treatment of feeding ! and swallowing dysfunction, receptive and expressive communication disorders and other commonly seen pediatric disorders in the inpatient, outpatient and clinic settings. To aid in assuring appropriate orientation, competency assessment and professional growth for all speech therapists within the organization. To assist manager and co-workers in identifying and developing systems, structures and processes that support high quality service, outcomes measures, and current clinical practice.

Conducts communication &/or feeding assessments/reassessments that are appropriate to area of service delivery and indication for service.
Gathers and analyzes information obtained from diagnosis, indication, medical history and current status, chronologic/cognitive/developmental age, parent/caregiver/physician concern, past response to care.
Analyzes information to plan for, select and pro! vide a comprehensive, objective assessment of expressive/recep! tive communication skills &/or feeding and dysphagia skills that encompasses the components necessary for reporting diagnostic findings and developing clinical recommendations and plan of care related to the specific needs of the client
Perform clinical feeding assessments according to department procedure
Perform Oral Pharyngeal Motility Studies (OPMâs) according to hospital procedure & to interpret OPMâs accurately in coordination with the Radiologist to determine patient swallowing function/dysfunction.
Perform objective assessments according to department procedure on patients with expressive and receptive communications disorders as seen in the pediatric populations.
Utilizes information gathered through assessment/reassessment of communication &/or feeding skills to develop a plan of care to include frequency of intervention, types of intervention, goal setting
Collaborates with patient, caregiver, and other healthcare ! providers in setting realistic goals and in developing a plan of care that is patient/caregiver focused and outcomes oriented
Identifies appropriate and measurable long term goals and short term goals for communication and/or feeding skill development that are realistic to the current status and expected outcomes
Continuously assesses, reassesses and modifies goals and plan of care based upon patient status, patient response to care, caregiver feedback and patient needs.
Utilizes an Episodes of Care model in establishing an initial and ongoing plan of care
2. Provides high quality patient care that reflects appropriate clinical reasoning and that optimizes patientâs potential for functional gains, improved quality of life, & increased care giver participation in the area of communication &/or feeding.
Adequately prepares for sessions, beginning and ending on time
Includes caregivers in therapy sessions and provides edu! cation, strategies, techniques that can be incorporated into daily rout! ines
Demonstrates good problem solving skills and ability to adapt without difficulty
Proactively pursues opportunities to collaborate with other healthcare professionals; provides and accepts information from all members of the multidisciplinary team to facilitate goal accomplishment
Utilizes effective communication skills with client, caregiver, professionals and other healthcare providers
Facilitates referrals to appropriate resources/agencies within the organization and community
Addresses patient attendance issues by educating on and enforcing the department policy and procedure
3. Completes comprehensive documentation appropriate to the setting in which the speech therapy intervention occurs and according to hospital and department policy and procedure
Documentation clearly and concisely records patient status, plan of care, intervention provided, response to care, progress towards goals, patient/caregiver! education and need for continued intervention in the area of speech therapy.
Documentation is completed in a timely manner and supports billed charges

4. Assists in the development and growth of the speech therapy team
Assists in the selection of new team members
Creates an individualized orientation plan for new hires that includes providing a variety of learning experiences in addition to assuming a full caseload specific to assigned clinical service areas
Develops, implements and evaluates skills validation/competencies for new speech therapists specific to the role for which they are hired. Counsels/coaches/mentors new speech therapists during the orientation period to develop and meet the goals of the orientation program.
Provides manager with input on new employee skill sets and professional development plans
Collaborates with manag! ement and staff to analyze staff needs related to professional growth. ! Develops, implements, evaluates and maintains education programs based on needs assessment, staff request, department direction/vision, new equipment/care practices, new program development, performance improvement projects, documentation audits
Works with individuals & team to identify their areas of strength and growth opportunities. Utilizes information to develop plans that support the personal and professional growth and development of each individual and the team.
Collaborates with manager in providing the speech therapists with input on individual employee competencies and professional development needs through the annual performance review process

Maintains current knowledge of national stand! ards, research based practice guidelines, best practice protocols and utilizes knowledge to enhance and direct clinical care
Assists manager and team with identifying, collecting, assessing and utilizing outcomes measures specific to pediatric speech therapy practice
Continuously assesses and reassesses services provided within the department, identifies opportunities for improvement and growth, develops and implements plan for establishing practices that meet patient care needs.
Assists manager in the development of an operating budget addressing staffing needs, revenues and expenses and assists with the analysis and explanation of variances from budget

Strong clinical knowledge of pediatric speech therapy theory, principles and practice including the areas of feeding and dysphagia

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Masterâs degree from an accredited college or university in Communication Disorders/Speech Language Patholog! y required.
Minimum 2 years experience working as a speech pathologist in pediatrics or pediatric clinical internship required.
Experience in pediatric feeding and dysphagia evaluation/diagnostics and treatment preferred
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) required to work
Current and valid Nebraska State License in Speech Language Pathology required.
Current and valid Certificate of Clinical Competency required.
