Responsible for directing, supervising and coordinating all functions and activities of the Nursing Staff. Participates as a member of the Medical Center's leadership team ! in planning, policy formation and administrative decision making with particular reference to role, functions and operations of the Hospital's Nursing Services in accordance with the philosophy, goals and objectives of Howard County Medical Center.

DUTIES

Directs all aspects of department operations effectively and efficiently.
a.Oversees day-to-day operations, which includes problem solving issues and insuring effective processing.
b.Develops and documents department procedures to insure consistent and accurate processing.
c.Insures service levels are achieved and maintained. Makes adjustments where necessary to meet service level requirements.
d.Monitors quality controls and implements improvements/changes to achieve quality levels.
e.Establishes the monthly call schedule for all staff.
f.Able to cover shifts for staff members as required.

Directs areas of accountability through strategic planning and review of department! operations to insure efficiency and effectiveness.
a.Meet! s regularly with department management to discuss and monitor operations, which may include problem solving issues and meeting service level requirements.
b.Monitors service levels to insure they are achieved and maintained.
c.Oversees scheduling to ensure adequate staffing is provided to maintain compliance with regulations and meet customer needs.

Performs Nursing division administrative activities.
a.Develops departmental strategic goals, scorecard objectives, policies/procedures, and standards of performance in accordance with organizational guidelines to provide nursing services to meet legal, regulatory, and medical staff guidelines.
b.Provides effective management of financial, personnel, material and informational resources for nursing departments.
c.Participates with leaders from the governing body, management team, medical staff and other departments in developing the facility's strategic plan.

Recruits and develops a qualifie! d and productive workforce.
a.Formulates job descriptions for new positions and ensures the accuracy of previous job descriptions in conjunction with Human Resources.
b.Recruits effectively for department positions by following established hiring practices and guidelines.
c.Orients new employees in a thorough manner to department and organizational operations and procedures.
d.Provides training to department staff in an appropriate and thorough manner.
e.Offers opportunity for continuing education by sharing own knowledge, accessing internal opportunities, and considering external opportunities to support the continued development of department staff.
f.Monitors and verifies the compliance of staff in regards to maintaining required licenses and certifications, as applicable.

Performs employee relations functions effectively to promote a positive work environment, influence retention and enhance communication.
a.Develops, supports, and a! ctively seeks activities and establishes an environment that promotes r! ecognition and retention for employees.
b.Communicates effectively and provides feedback to staff which may include department meetings, individual employee meetings, rounding, etc....
c.Addresses employee issues in an effective and timely manner.
d.Communicates with department head and HR regarding employee issues appropriately in an effort to obtain guidance and reduce potential organizational liability.
e.Enforces and supports policies and procedures with employees, as necessary.
f.Administers annual performance appraisal process for staff

Directs departmental financial operations, effectively.
a.Monitors budget and expenses on a monthly basis.
b.Provides budgeting reports, as requested, to department head in a thorough and detailed manner.
c.Manages and monitors supply usage within department.
d.Maintains timekeeping records and updates appropriately and accurately for department staff.
e.Works with vendors, as appropriat! e, to negotiate best value purchases.
f.Participates in budgeting planning process.

Promotes and monitors patient safety and performs all aspects of position in a compliant manner, following all applicable state and federal regulations.
a.Directs implementation and ensures compliance with policies/procedures and standards of performance to promote optimum health care delivery of all nursing services.
b.Follows up with staff on current patient safety incidents which have been reported.
c.Understands and enforces related regulations and laws which govern the performance of the services being provided, which also includes employment law.
d.Maintains current knowledge of laws, regulations, and current events that may impact work produced.
e.Considers the impact of regulations in work that is produced and discusses concerns with department head and/or CEO appropriately to ensure compliance.
f.Reduces organizational liability by following and ! applying all compliance regulations consistently

Performs othe! r duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current Nebraska Registered Nursing license
  • Bachelors degree required
  • A minimum of five years of nursing experience in acute care and a proven background of leadership in a management role
  • Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advance Life Support required. Directs all aspects of department operations effectively and efficiently.
