Under the supervision of the Unit Director and Clinical Manager, identifies, implements and evaluates nursing interventions providing patient care in bot! h routine and less predictable situations. Practice is governed by established standards of nursing care which are designed to identify the special skills and competencies required.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Assesses infant at birth and uses data collected to initiate appropriate nursing care to support transition to extrauterine life.
Gives primary care to the normal infant and mother and provides intensive neonatal nursing care for neonates whose care needs cannot be met with mother-baby care.
Plans patient care with professional health team, sets priorities for nursing care and implements nursing care plan involving the family of the neonate in the plan of care.
Assists physicians by reporting any changes in infant's condition and preparing for special procedures such as circumcisions, umbilical artery catheter placements, IV's, spinal taps, chest tubes, resuscitation, intubation, etc.
Participates in t! he health education process of the infant's family based upon ! an assessment of the family's knowledge, level of understanding, skills, resources, and cultural needs coordinated through a program which accommodates the family's needs and documents such in the infant's record.
Supervises and/or directs care given by other personnel on the health team which may include licensed practical nurses, nursing students, nursing assistants or float personnel.
Provides emotional support to family members and promotes family integration in the Intensive Care Nursery, especially in instances when direct contact is not possible, by frequent telephone communication, photographs, and letters.
Utilizes in-service programs, unit meetings and other educational opportunities to increase clinical competence and participates in Nursing Department committees to develop, review and revise nursing procedures, nursing care standards, patient education and patient acuity system. Maintains NALs certification. Completes required unit com! petencies.
Evaluates and monitors quality of patient care along with other members of the unit and Nursing Performance Improvement Committees. Identifies unsafe patient care practice and assumes responsibility for intervention.
Operates patient care equipment safely and competently. Keeps Nursery area and equipment clean following Infection Control guidelines.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor. May do the job of Pediatrics, Unit 5, Birthing Center or Mother-Baby unit Registered Nurse.
Participates in all outreach activities provided by the Department.
Promotes culture of customer service excellence and family-centered care philosophy.
Qualifications
Education:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN degree preferred.
Experience:
NICU expereince preferred or a minimum of 2 years Med/Surg experience.
Licensure:
Current Nebras! ka license as a Registered Nurse.
Neonatal Resuscitation Progr! am Certification.
