Under general supervision of the Surgery Director or designee, provides safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, and individualized nursing care to patients and their families in the immediate pre-surgical and Phase II recovery period. Maintains principles of asepsis and technical knowledge and skills. Promotes, restores, and maintains the patients' physiological process in a safe, comfortable and effective environment.
Cares for patients in each age group: neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. Patients are from both traditional and non-traditional family structures with a variety of sociocultural and educational backgrounds.
Uses and discloses patient protected health information: 1) Only as it applies to job functions, 2) in amounts minimally necessary for intended purpose, and 3) in a confidential manner.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
1.* Uses the nursing process to provide patient care and in doing so, evaluates the pre-procedural patient, and assesses the patient though interviews and physical examinations according to established standards. Prepares the patient for interventional procedure, ensuring completion of the pre-procedural work-up as ordered by the physician or Anesthesia Department.
2.* Receives patients post-operatively observing and evaluating patients in Phase II of recovery from anesthetic, according to nursing process. Performs care required for successful recovery from the surgical procedure.
3.* Performs procedures and treatments and uses equipment according to Nursing Service policies and procedures.
4.* Records care given, status of patient, physician's orders and so forth onto patient chart and designated forms.
5.* Assigns, coordinates, and/or directs care given by other nursing staff in the Department Director's absence. Identifies when other unit personnel need assistance and offers help.
6.* Communicates with other hospital departments, nursing personnel and physician's offices as required to give care. Communicates with patient and family members information, explanations, and reassurances necessary for acceptance of surgical intervention and associated nursing care.
7.* Instructs patients and family members to insure good post-op recovery, giving good home instructions.
Qualifications
Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
1. Knowledge of nursing theory and practice acquired through completion of an accredited school of nursing to be eligible for licensure as a Registered Nurse.
2. Current Nebraska license as a Registered Nurse. ACLS & PALS certification current or passing course with next offering.
3. Ability to be on feet and walk up to 80% of work time; ability to push, and/or pull up to 200 pounds, lift up to 50 pounds for up to 20% of work time when positioning patient, moving equipment and so forth.
