Under the supervision of the Unit Director, performs the primary functions of a registered nurse in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the care of all assigned patients during his/her shift. Is responsible for adherence to established standards of nursing practice, for managing all assigned personnel, supplies and equipment necessary for patient care and for promoting teamwork with physicians and personnel of other departments.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Utilizes the nursing process to provide patient care.
Utilizes assessment skills and tools to identify patient problem/needs and interventions. Demonstrates knowledge of various stages of growth and development; including physical growth, cognitive development, personality formation, expression and self-concept. Recognizes signs and symptoms and diagnostic test results requiring immediate intervention and takes appropriate action.
Initiates and maintains a written plan of care which includes actual or potential patient problems identified during assessment of patient and interview of patient and family. Utilizes members of interdisciplinary team to meet post-hospital care needs of patient and family. Individualizes patient care according to patient's developmental level and family situation. Evaluates patient's response to plan of care and revises care plan as needed.
Implements patient/family teaching utilizing teaching materials appropriate to patient's developmental level. Documents response of patient/family to teaching.
Performs procedures and treatments and uses equipment according to Nursing Service Policy and Procedures Manuals; including administration of intravenous medications, endotracheal suctioning, insertion of nasogastric tubes, etc. Assembles supplies, sets up equipment and assists physician with physical exams and treatments as well as with special procedures such as lumbar puncture, venous cutdown and chest tube insertion. Recognizes potential adverse responses of patient to procedure and/or treatment and initiates corrective measures when adverse response occurs. Utilizes explanation and approach appropriate to patient's developmental level when performing care. Transcribes and carries out physician orders. Recognizes need for and requests changes in physician orders and questions unclear orders.
In the Unit Director's absence assigns, coordinates and directs delivery of patient care. Supervises care given by other nursing staff, e.g., registered nurse, licensed practical nurse and nursing assistant. Informs unit manager or nursing supervisor of significant unit activities, staffing needs and changes in patient condition. Identifies needs of peers and offers assistance as necessary.
Utilizes appropriate chart forms/computer to document patient assessment, medications, treatments and progress toward patient goals.
Assists with orientation of new personnel and serves as a resource person by answering questions, identifying location of materials and/or demonstrating procedures and use of equipment.
Qualifications
Education
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN degree preferred.
Experience
Previous Peds experience or one to two years Med/Surg experience preferred.
Licensure
Current Nebraska license as a Registered Nurse.
