This person must be trained to provide assessment, treatment or care for neonates and infants (up to one year of age) in the NICU, general nursery, pediatrics, and emergency department.
Job Summary:
The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP), under the direction of the Medical Director of Southeast Nebraska Neonatology Group and in communication with NICU physicians, Director of Children's Services, Neonatal Clinical Nurse Specialist, and the Chair of the Staff Assumed Management, initiates and manages the evaluation and medical treatment of neonates admitted to the NICU.
Essential Duties:
1. Takes medical history of mother/neonate, performs physical exam, orders appropriate diagnostic tests to rule out or to confirm diagnosis. 2. Consults with the physician regarding chief complaints that fall into categories that would indicate a need for a second opinion, confirmation of diagnosis, and/or treatment/admission by a physician. For example:
Whenever situations arise which go beyond the scope of practice/experience of the NNP. Emergent conditions requiring prompt medical interventions, after initial stabilizing care has been started. Acute decompensation of the patient situation. A problem that is not resolving as anticipated. Unexplainable historical, physical, or laboratory findings. Upon request of the neonate's family, NNP, or physician.
3. Initiates pharmacological therapy as indicated for appropriate treatment. 4. Provides the neonate's family with appropriate patient education regarding diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. 5. Documents neonate's history and physical, objective findings, assessment and plan of treatment with the chart being co-signed by the Neonatologist on duty. 6. Participates in neonatal transport services providing clinical care responsibilities per transport protocol. 7. Works closely with the NICU and general nursery staff and other support staff to meet neonate's needs. 8. Demonstrates the ability to be an intricate part of the health care team, delivering health care in the NICU and general nursery setting. Upon occasion will be asked to assist with appropriate age patients in pediatrics and emergency department. 9. Frequent contact with patient service areas including contact with neonates, neonate's family, physicians, staff, and public requires the ability to communicate and influence people using tactful consideration, sometimes in difficult or disturbing situations. 10. Maintain patient confidentiality. 11. Maintain professional demeanor at all times. 12. Attend and participate in staff meetings. 13. Attend any educational seminars as requested. 14. Read and comply with all policies and procedures and personnel policies as stated. 15. Understand and demonstrate compliance with HIPAA regulations. 16. Understand and demonstrate the twelve (12) behavior standards for 'Embrace the Spirit'. 117. Understand and demonstrate the seven (7) 'Standards of Conduct' as defined in 'Our Values and Ethics at Work' reference guide.
Education:
Graduate from an accredited program for Neonatal Nurse Practitioners
Experience:
1 year of Nurse Practitioner experience preferred.
License/Certification:
Currently licensed as a Physician's Assistant in this state. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification. Current BLS certification required. CPR Certification National certification preferred
