Provides for the Management of Patient Care activities ensuring qu! ality and standards of care. Supervising the planning, organizing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating the care given to all patients on designated unit/area of responsibility. Coordinates patient care by assisting all staff in care delivery with an emphasis on problem solving, decision making and coaching and mentoring. Participates in formulating and interpreting hospital and nursing policies and procedures with staff and in analyzing and resolving staff problems as they occur. Works with staff to achieve unit goals, and in making staffing decisions for the unit. Serves as a resource person to the house supervisor for appropriate staffing as required by specific unit/area of responsibility. Serves on facility committees and projects as directed by the Unit Director.

Responsible for the effective operation of services, new program opportunities, service enhancements, staff performance evaluation, operational and capital budgets, and for quality patient care o! utcomes. Will actively participate in performance improvement ! activities.

Plans and implements care for patients with a variety of surgical, radiological, cardiology and complex medical problems. These patients may range in age from neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult or geriatric at various developmental levels. Responsible for addressing patient and family diverse cultural backgrounds focusing on family centered care.

Essential Duties:
Responsible for the daily operations; assigns, coordinates and provides for delivery quality care for designated nursing unit/area of responsibility/areas. Assesses staffing needs for proper utilization of personnel in relation to patient needs and acuity levels. Assures proper staffing levels and mix for unit/area of responsibility consistent with the budget. Develops work schedules for unit personnel and makes necessary adjustments for staff coverage.

Uses knowledge of nursing process, nursing diagnosis, and care planning in directing staff providing patient c! are. Monitors effectiveness and outcomes of patient care and makes changes as necessary. Directs others in accordance with established standards during emergencies (e.g., tornado, Code Blue, Fire, etc.). Ensure others are providing needed services.

Responsible for timely completion and submission of CMS required regulatory standards. Responsible for teaching Functional Independent Measure (FIM) scores to employees.

Coordinate team conferences and ensures that care plans are signed and put on chart.

Serves as a resource person in orientation of new personnel by answering questions, instructing in policy and procedures, assisting preceptors and so forth. Advices staff regarding treatments, medications, etc., in accordance with medical staff and nursing and hospital policies and procedures. Ensures competency of employees and collaborates with Director in interviewing, hiring and retention of staff. Responsible for a positive work environment on the ! assigned units.

Completes annual performance appraisal for sta! ff. Provides feedback to Director regarding individual staff performance/development. Counsels and disciplines staff as warranted. Monitors/develops department Policies and procedures in collaboration with professional staff for the assigned areas; writing, implementing and achieving goals. Responsible for planning/conducting staff meetings, maintaining standards of practice and performance set by hospital, unit and regulatory agencies.

Responsible for performance improvement activities; quality improvement and patient safety activities; maintains compliance with JCAHO accreditation and other internal and external regulatory standards of conduct. Develops and implements plans to resolve performance improvement issues on unit/area of responsibility to improve outcomes. Supervises and educates staff regarding physician preferences through review, collaboration and interaction with physicians in all specialties.

Promotes continuity of care through chart revie! w, patient rounds (i.e. discharge phone calls, inpatient visits, etc.) and observation. Conducts patient interviews, helps to identify the needs of patients/families, staff, and physicians; hears and works to resolve patient complaints; and problem solves with staff. Monitors patient satisfaction scores and implements action plans with staff as necessary to maintain at or above hospital goal.

Coordinates patient care by working collaboratively with all ancillary departments, physicians, public agencies, and referral agencies/areas. (i.e. social work, pastoral care). Rounds daily on patients and collaborates with multidisciplinary team.

Approves all employee time sheets in the absence of the Director or by delegation of the Director.

Assumes budget responsibility in developing capital, operational and personnel budgets. Responsible for the formulation of budgets for assigned areas, promoting optimum allocation and utilization of resources across th! e division to accomplish defined goals. Plans and suggests equipment an! d supply needs to provide appropriate patient care.

Identifies areas appropriate for the initiation of nursing research. Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals and other literature and attending related seminars, conferences and the like. Promotes staff education and maintenance of staff competence/certification by conducting educational sessions at unit meetings, annual skills fairs, etc. (i.e. researching)

Performs staff duties when necessary to assist with staffing and/or to maintain clinical competency.

Qualifications

Education:
BSN required

Experience:
Three to five years on-the-job experience in related field required to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of hospital, unit, and departmental procedures and policies to provide guidance to others and meet quality/quantity standards. Management experience preferred. Competent in the! use of a personal computer.

Knowledge of the growth and development needs of infants through adults and the ability to adapt nursing cares to age and development level of patients ranging from infant to senescence specific to designated area.

Prior Functional Independent Measure (FIM) scores preferred

License/Certifications:
Current State Registered Nurse License required.

BLS certification required.

Certified in Rehab nursing
