To perf! orm laboratory procedures using established and approved protocols including moderate and high complexity lab testing and phlebotomy.

Essential Duties:
Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, timely reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.

Evaluates results for abnormalities and inconsistencies by following predetermined protocol and takes the necessary action to alert the appropriate personnel or corrects the malfunctioning instrumentation.

Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies. Documents all quality control activities, instument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.

Performs requisite preventive maintenance procedures on analyzers by following manufacturer's instructions to assure reliable, continuous performance from the instruments.

Communicates results to necessary laboratory personnel and/or physicians via verbal, w! ritten, or computer link communication.

Maintains a c! lean and orderly work area according to safety standards and laboratory image requirements.

Maintains sufficient current inventory of reagents and supplies according to laboratory protocol.

Contributes to the efficient operation of the laboratory.

Reads and initials laboratory memos on department bulletin boards as soon as possible during shift worked.

Attends department mettings when available and reads and initials minutes of all meetings.

Maintains confidentiality of all laboratory information according to procedure.

Documents results of lab test to work logs according to laboratory procedures.

Rotates stock of reagents and test kits to maintain currency and continuity of lot numbers.

Determines when backup instrumentation is necessary and acts accordingly.

Troubleshoots malfunction of lab instrumentation. Orders necessary parts and is responsible for repair or notification of service person! nel.

Maintains records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples.

Follows the lab's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are nto within the lab's established and acceptable levels of performance.

Demonstrates capability to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either crrects the problems or immediately notifies the technical consultant, clinical consultant or lab director.

Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the lab's established performance specifications.

Follows established procedures for collecting and processing biological speciments for analysis from all groups of patients, including neonatal, pediatric, and geriatric patients.

Performs assigned analytical tests or procedures.

Recognizes factors that affect measurements and resu! lts and takes appropriate action according to predetermined protocols. !

Recognizes abnormal results and takes appropriate action, according to predetermined protocols.

Operates instruments within the scope of training utilizing established protocols and quality control checks.

Recognizes equipment malfunction, takes appropriate actions, and notifies appropriate supervisory personnel.

Communicates information such as test results, normal range and speciment requirements to authorized personnel.

Performs routine quality control and maintains accurate records. Recognizes out-of-control results and notifies supervisory personnel.

Demonstrates laboratory technical skills to new employees.

Ensure proper handling of specimens and disposal of contaminated material according to the lab safety procedures.

Qualifications

Education:
Associates Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from an acredited institution with Certificaton of Registry, or

Equivalent ! laboratory training

Skills/Knowledge:
Good interpersonal skills in dealing with patients and staff members.

Ability to multi-task.

Flexibility and willingness to work as needed, including on-call and weekend rotations.

Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

Additional languages desirable.

Ability to successfully perform venipunctures.

Basic computer skills.

Familiarity with medical terminology preferred.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals.
